6.35 The Medicine Of Brahman
Medicine (aushadha) means that which gets rid of the body's faults. But the medicine should be according to the disease, and even in that, the qualification of the patient must be taken into account prior to consuming it. Only then should the patient take medicine, only then will disease go. This is the rule. In this manner, when we know that the disease is to do with ignorance, and its symptomas are - bondage, fear and sorrow. The patient is the ignorant individual with the mind, but he may be a mumukshu with a pure intellect. The only medicine for such a person is "knowledge of brahman", but liberation will not be achieved by just chanting "brahman, brahman".
This brahman does not stay in heaven such that you can worship him. This brahman also does not stay in the nether regions such that there are several serpent hoods on him, like shesha naaga. Neither is he the king of the gods like Indra that you can partake of the nectar of immortality. Brahman is such a notion that if you detach yourself from it, it stops being brahman. It will become your play thing. Without you, brahman will become inert, unconscious. Without brahman your will break into pieces, become disconnected, broken.
The medicine of the knowledge of brahman is neither to be worshipped as heaven or hell, neither does one have to visit Vaikuntha in the seventh heaven. One does not experience brahman after death, it can be experienced while alive. It is not a non-immediate belief, it is an immediate experience.
