11.0 Various Opinions On The Nature Of The Self

The grossness of the body is primarily due to earth. The root of its liquid aspect is water. The root of its heat is fire. The root of movement and breath is wind. The root of its emptiness is space. The root of conceptualization (sankalpa) or the mind is ahankaara. The root of thought is mahaan or Mahat element. The root of deep sleep is Prakriti. What is the root of the "I", "I" (aham, aham) knowledge that is pulsating in your body? That is the self alone.

The self means the "I". "I am" is accepted by everyone in the present time. But "what am I?" - there is difference of opinion with regards to this specific aspect of the self. Here are the variations in opinion : Was the self existing before or not? Will it remain in the future or not? Is it the body or a doer-enjoyer different from the body, is it the same size as the body, in a corner of the body, or inside and outside the body at the same time? So on and so forth.

Difference in opinion happens due to ignorance about the true nature of the entity. The methodology of knowledge aims to list all of the opinions about the true nature of the entity and refute them. The knowledge of the essence is that which is devoid of all superimpositions.
